Step One: Wash It by Hand
You might be tempted to just toss your coffee thermos in the dishwasher, but that's a big no-no. The harsh detergents and high temperatures can damage the vacuum seal, which means your thermos won't be able to keep coffee hot for as long. Instead, wash it by hand using warm water and mild soap. Be sure to get into all the nooks and crannies, especially around the lid. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and dry completely before using again.
Step Two: Use Baking Soda for a Deep Clean
Fill your thermos with fresh water and add 1/2 cup of baking soda. Let this mixture sit for 1 hour or more so that the baking soda has a chance to work its magic. In the morning, simply rinse out your thermos with warm water and you're good to go!
Step Three: Descale It Regularly
If you live in an area with hard water, your coffee thermos is likely starting to build up scale—a nasty mixture of minerals that can make your coffee taste bad and shorten the life of your thermos. To descale it, fill the thermos with equal parts water and distilled white vinegar. Let it sit overnight, then rinse thoroughly in the morning (again, no need to dry). Do this once a month or so to keep your thermos in top condition.
